My Travel Story
I believe that travel is one of the greatest educators. I became a travel agent with the dreams of helping people learn more about themselves and the world beyond their backyard. Whether it is a trip to Writing-On-Stone in Alberta or a trip to Chauvet Cave in France, we can learn so much about ourselves and our neighbours by travelling.
One of my favourite travel memories is from my trip to Japan. My friend and I were wandering Kyoto looking for Kiyomizu Dera when a kind Japanese lady offered to help us. She didn't speak English and my friend spoke very, very little Japanese. As she led us down a tiny, cherry blossom-filled street, we rounded a corner and a massive cemetery opened up in front of us. It was located in a small valley and there were acres and acres of memorials. And when I thought that must be the end of the memorials, more and more appeared. It was awe inspiring. It turns out it was the "back way" to Kiyomizu Dera and a much better way, in my opinion, to enter the temple complex. I think the reason that this is one of my greatest travel memories, beyond the obvious wonder of what we saw, is that we took the chance, stepped out of our comfort zone and trusted someone we couldn't communicate with. If we did not do this we would have missed out on the tranquil side of the festival atmosphere of Kiyomizu Dera.
